THE BIRTH OF AN ONGOMA DRUM

Installation

In the summer of 2021, the drum 74.41.234 in the attic archives of MARKK Hamburg‘s „African Collection“ initiated an unexpected journey for the collective COME IN TENT: a long-term research project on the origins, history, traditions and current practices of the sacred Ongoma Drums.

As the first artistic documents of this journey, the installation THE BIRTH OF AN ONGOMA DRUM facilitates a sensoric encounter with the multiple animate entities and the processes of craftmanship involved in the making of an ongoma drum. It offers an immersive space, in which their sounds, scents and haptics can be explored.
